How to choose the right duvet: A guide to warmth levels
Dec 23, 2022
Choosing a Down Duvet can be confusing. There are now countless types on the market, and choosing the right one can often seem like a daunting task. Thanks to the warmth ratings, however, the choice is simpler, as we already have a clearer idea of which product is right for us.
The right level of warmth is a personal choice: some people feel the cold more than others, some live in the mountains and others by the sea, some live in older homes and others in modern ones. Often, several factors influence the choice of the right warmth rating.
LET’S TALK ABOUT WARMTH RATINGS
The warmth rating represents the thermal capacity of the Down Duvet, that is, how well it can retain body heat during rest.
The warmth rating mainly depends on two elements:
- the filling weight (more filling means greater warmth);
- the quality and size of the goose down clusters used (larger clusters provide superior insulation).
WARMTH RATING
Warmth ratings commonly range from 2 to 5. Zenoni & Colombi has also created warmth rating 6.
Rating 2: considered a Spring/Summer Down Duvet, lightweight and highly breathable. Ideal for warm or heated environments and also perfect in summer with air conditioning. Suitable for temperatures between 20 °C and 23 °C.

Rating 3: considered an Autumn Down Duvet, perfect for the transitional seasons.
It provides comfort without excessive warmth, ideal for those who sleep in moderately temperate environments.
Suitable for temperatures between 19 °C and 21 °C.
Rating 4: considered a lightweight Winter Down Duvet, suitable for those looking for a good balance between warmth and lightness.
Perfect for heated bedrooms or for those who do not feel the cold particularly strongly.
Recommended for temperatures between 18 °C and 20 °C.
Rating 5: considered a warm Winter Down Duvet, ideal for the winter season.
Perfect in areas with a cold climate or in rooms heated for only a few hours a day.
Suitable for temperatures between 16 °C and 18 °C.
Rating 6: considered a Down Duvet for those who need extra warmth.
Heavily filled, it is perfect for unheated bedrooms, poorly insulated homes, mountain areas, or for those who feel the cold intensely.
Recommended for temperatures below 16 °C.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT WARMTH RATING
Choosing the warmth rating mainly depends on your personal sensitivity to the cold and the temperature of the room where the Down Duvet will be used.
The first piece of advice is to read the descriptions of the different warmth ratings carefully and ask yourself:
“Which situation best describes me?”
The answer to this question already allows you to make an initial selection of the ideal Down Duvet.
For those who are undecided, we suggest choosing one warmth rating higher: it is always preferable to sleep slightly less covered than to feel cold and have to add a heavy blanket.
An excellent alternative for those who want a solution for all seasons is the 4 Seasons Down Duvet.
Made up of two Down Duvets of different weights, which can be separated or joined using practical clip buttons, it adapts to a wide range of climatic conditions.
The lighter Down Duvet is ideal for warmer periods, while the medium-weight one is perfect for autumn. When joined together, they create a warmer Down Duvet suitable for winter.
