Optimal temperature for the bedroom
Jul 25, 2022
In the bedroom, the ideal temperature ranges between 16 and 18°C. Although these temperatures may seem too low to us, scientists say that the room should always be kept cool even in winter. Let’s look at the reasons together:
- Coolness promotes sleep, leading to longer and more pleasant rest.
- Coolness allows the release of melatonin, a hormone that helps counteract the aging of cells and organs.
- Low temperatures help the proper functioning of metabolism, preventing the onset of illnesses such as diabetes and obesity.
- Energy use is lowered, bringing benefits to bills and the wallet (on average, each degree of temperature increase raises consumption by 7%).
- With less consumption, there is less pollution, contributing to the protection of the environment.
- A cool climate improves oxygenation and thus breathing.
- A cool climate allows the body to cool down, releasing high levels of melatonin, a hormone that helps counter the aging process of cells and organs.
- Thanks to the cooling of the body, the body will also produce high levels of growth hormone, which helps us feel and look younger.
- A cold room also helps the proper functioning of metabolism, keeping it fast and active, preventing the onset of diseases related to metabolic processes such as diabetes and obesity.
For an optimal bedroom, it is important to also maintain a proper level of moisture. In winter, the optimal level ranges between 40 and 60%. High moisture encourages the growth of moulds harmful to the home and health, while too low moisture can cause dryness of the mucous membranes and coughing. It is important to remember that at night moisture increases due to sweating and breathing; for this reason, it is important to air the room every morning by opening the windows.
How do we counteract the low temperature of the room?
To reach the optimal temperature in bed (about 32-34°C), the choice of bedding is fundamental.
Choosing bedding that is too light or made of unsuitable materials can indeed compromise sleep quality. To face these situations, it is important to choose a set with heat-regulating properties, such as winter goose down quilts, warm yet light on the body.
