Choosing the right sheet sizes is a priority that ensures not only a good, restorative night's sleep, but also high-quality sleep that lasts over time. In the guide below, we will see how to choose the right sheet size based on your needs and your bed.
Sheet size for a double bed
To begin navigating the different sheet sizes, it is important to start with the basics and have a clear understanding of the dimensions of the bed and mattress.
There are several sizes of double mattresses, such as:
- French, measuring approximately 140x190 cm or 140x200 cm.
- standard double, measuring 160x190 cm or 160x200 cm.
- king size, initially common in the USA and now also very popular in Europe, measuring 180x190 or 180x200 cm.
For all sizes, the mattress thickness varies, depending on the model, from approximately 14 to 29 cm.
It is also important to specify that “double” dimensions usually refer to a two-person size, meaning two sleeping places.
So: how do you choose the size of double sheets?
Let us hypothetically take the size of a standard double mattress (160x200 cm). Let us also consider that the sheet overhang (that is, the length to be left hanging down the sides) is around 40/50 cm.
With this information in mind, and considering that it is always preferable to choose a larger rather than a smaller size, we can easily calculate the optimal size of our double flat sheet: 160 cm + 50cm + 50cm = 260cm. For a total of 260x300 cm.
The correct fitted sheet sizes
This does not apply, however, when choosing the size of fitted sheets, as their dimensions must match those of the mattress. As for the height (or thickness) of the “fitted skirt” that wraps around the mattress, especially in case of doubt, it is always better to choose a larger size that allows all mattresses, including the thinnest and thickest, to fit the fitted sheet.
Single-and-a-half sheet sizes

First of all, we distinguish a single-and-a-half bed from a double bed by the number of sleeping places, as this format accommodates only one person.
The standard single-and-a-half mattress measures 120x190 cm or 120x200 cm, which is 40 cm narrower than a double mattress and 40 cm wider than a single bed.
The same rules apply here: the optimal size of the flat sheet allows for an overhang of around 40 cm on each side. Added to the mattress width, this gives the correct width for the top sheet: 120 cm + 40cm + 40cm = 200 cm.
In this case, we have calculated a slightly smaller overhang on the sides of the sheet than for a double bed, as it is intended for a single sleeping place rather than two.
By contrast, the size of fitted sheets should always match the dimensions of the mattress they are intended for, with just a few extra centimetres if necessary.
Single-sheet sizes
As for single-sheet sizes, we always begin by assessing the mattress dimensions, which, in standard formats, range from 70x190/200 cm and 80x190/200 cm for smaller single beds up to 90x190/200 cm. Here too, since the bed is intended for one person, the amount of excess fabric is proportionally reduced as the mattress width decreases. To ensure comfortable, high-quality rest, single flat sheets have an average overhang of 40 cm on each side, enough to allow a good range of movement during sleep without compromising comfort.
As in other cases, the more precise the size of the fitted single-and-a-half sheet, the better, allowing the bed linen to stay in place and adhere effectively to the mattress during rest.
