How to Create a Table Setting for the Holidays

The term "Mise En Place," of French origin, means "to put in place," and it is much more than just setting the table. It is an art, a preparation that brings to life a table reflecting grace and refinement. If you are looking for some inspiration to create a perfect Christmas table, you are in the right place!

If you want to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, typical of Northern European homes, then Christmas in Scandinavian style is just what you need. This elegant Christmas table is based on simple and natural elements, conveying a sense of authenticity and comfort.

Wood, fabrics such as linen, cotton, and wool, candles, and small traditional decorations are the key ingredients to create this unique setting.

Step (1): The Art of the White Tablecloth

The foundation of every table is the tablecloth. Nothing can match the timeless grace of a white tablecloth for special occasions. Choose a high-quality tablecloth, perhaps adorned with hand-stitched embroidery. This choice not only adds a touch of luxury but also represents the craft of handiwork, bringing a feeling of purity and calm to your table.

White is a versatile choice that suits any kind of decoration and style perfectly. Whether you want to create a classic and traditional atmosphere or a more modern and simple look, the white tablecloth offers a perfect base to express your creativity.

Step (2): Matching Napkins with Refined Details

Do not forget the napkins, choose napkins decorated with refined hand-stitched details. These napkins add class to your table and, at the same time, are highly practical. They keep cleanliness and grace during the meal, ensuring every guest feels pampered and special.

Step (3): Hand-Embroidered Centerpieces and Runners

To create a truly unique atmosphere, highlight your table with centerpieces and runners hand-embroidered. These additional elements come in a variety of shapes and designs, giving you the chance to create focal points that add originality and refinement to your decoration. Choose from a range of patterns and styles to harmoniously match your tablecloth and napkins.

Step (4): The Art of Creation

With all these carefully tended details, you will have created a timeless table. The atmosphere that will arise will be magical, a dining experience that unites white, the delicacy of details, and the craft quality in a single harmony.

After defining the style and colors you want for your Christmas table, follow these steps:

  1. Tablecloth: Spread the tablecloth evenly over the table, leaving at least 30 cm of drop on the sides.
  2. Plate Placement: The plates are the most important part of the setting. Usually, there are three plates: starter, first course, and main course. Add the bread plate at the top left.
  3. Cutlery: Arrange the cutlery correctly. The fork goes to the left of the plate, the knife with the blade facing inward on the right. The spoon or dessert spoon is placed horizontally above the plate.
  4. Napkin: Place the napkin to the left. If you have space, do not overlap it with the cutlery, so your guests can easily place it on their laps.
  5. Glasses: Put the glasses to the right of the plate, at the height of the tip of the knife. Make sure to have at least two glasses: a larger one for water and a smaller one for wine. If you will also serve white or red wine, place an extra glass. Arrange them from largest to smallest, starting with the water glass closest in and going down in size with the wine glasses, leaving the glasses for sparkling wine towards the outside of the arrangement.

With this classic-tasting table setting, your holidays will be unforgettable, full of grace and refinement. Merry Christmas!
